The sound of aKadem
Writing our original music has been something that has both come easy to us and been challenging. Our first two originals, 'Hurricane' and 'Take Me There', were written early on in the months of September and October in 2023, a long time before our other songs were in the works.

A staple of an aKadem original has always been a driving guitar riff which is what Hurricane started with, however this one was written by our drummer, Aston. He handed it over to our lead guitarist Ethan and we built on the rhythm section the next day. 'Hurricane' has undergone changes since it's been written, including tweaked lyrics and an extended outro with a halftime breakdown, but it still remains true to it's sound.

'Take Me There' can be considered more complex then 'Hurricane', with inverted chords and snippets of a drum solo, which shows our development with each original. The lyrics are storytelling and more straightforward compared to the metaphor-pitted lyrics of Hurricane, but each song has it's own narrative.

The Soundclash competition at Olby's had us on a time-crunch to create more original music to perform, which challenged us but also developed our sound even more. 'Road To Nowhere' and 'Little Manor' have a more heavy take on rock whereas 'Come And Go' stays in the energetic lane. 'Parodies', 'Funny Business' and 'Will I Lose You' bring down the high-octane atmosphere of our gigs to evoke more emotion, only to be brought back up again by the blues-riddled finisher 'Needs'. All of these songs were written in the space of a few months and all are something for us to be proud of despite the time we had to write them.

The fundamentals that give every track its quintessential sound are the expressive lyrics woven between a tight rhythm section, propelling lead guitar riffs and intricate yet powerful drum grooves. We explore different subgenres to create more complex music, including punk influenced drumming and Hendrix inspired guitar lines, yet every original has an evident sound that we have claimed as our own.
